Introducing the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL)

On December 3, 2024, Australia unveiled the new Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL), marking a significant milestone in the country’s skilled migration program.

This comprehensive list of occupations replaces the previous Temporary Skill Shortage (482) visa’s Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) and Short-Term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL).

The CSOL is now central to the Core Skills Stream of the revamped Skills in Demand (SID) visa, which officially replaced the TSS visa on December 7, 2024.

The introduction of the CSOL is part of a broader strategy by Jobs and Skills Australia (JSA) to modernize and streamline skilled migration pathways. By consolidating occupation lists and aligning them with current labor market needs, the government aims to make it easier for skilled workers and employers to navigate visa options.

Key Features of the CSOL:

  1. Broader Occupation Scope: The CSOL currently includes 456 occupations, offering expanded opportunities across sectors such as healthcare, education, engineering, and construction.
  2. Unified Application Pathways: The list applies not only to the Skills in Demand visa but also to the Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) visa, simplifying the process for temporary and permanent residency applications.
  3. Salary Thresholds: Occupations eligible under the Core Skills Stream must meet a median salary threshold of $73,150, indexed annually to reflect market trends.

If you are planning on applying for the new Skills in Demand visa subclass 482, the first stage is to make sure your occupation is still listed. If it is, you can learn more about the SID visa, the requirements and more.
