About the Role
The School of Mathematics and Statistics at our university is seeking a researcher with expertise in Machine Learning in Omics to strengthen and expand its capabilities in this field. This role offers the opportunity to develop and lead a research program in an area of statistics with a focus on methodology and applications to omics data, contributing to the School’s existing strengths in data science. Based at Melbourne Integrative Genomics (MIG, ), hosted by the School of Mathematics and Statistics, the successful applicant will have access to a collaborative research environment and lead cutting-edge research in statistical method development for omics data. In addition to research, this role involves teaching and supervising students across undergraduate and postgraduate programs. You will contribute to coursework in mathematics, statistics, and their applications, helping to shape the next generation of researchers in the field.
Your responsibilities will include: * The conduct of research and contribution to knowledge through scholarship, refereed publications and presentations.
- Active application and success in obtaining external research grant income to support research.
- Active participation in research seminars and conferences.
- Active supervision of postgraduate, both MSc and PhD, students.
- Effective preparation and delivery of lectures at undergraduate and postgraduate level and the marking and assessment of that material, including as Subject Coordinator.
- Proactive development of subject materials and delivery, including the use of modern technology and online resources as appropriate.
Who We Are Looking For
We are seeking a skilled researcher with expertise in statistical learning for large biological data. You will have a strong publication record, the ability to attract research funding, and a track record of building national and international research collaborations. Your ability to develop and teach engaging statistics and data science subjects, mentor graduate students, and contribute to research and administration will be key to this role. Strong communication, teamwork, and project management skills are essential.
You will also have: * A PhD or equivalent research higher degree in statistics, or a closely related discipline.
- Demonstrated research excellence in relation to career stage including a strong record of publication in statistical learning applied to large biological data, which could include theory, methodology, and applications.
- The ability to develop research links with other schools, departments and research groups nationally and internationally.
- The ability to attract research funding through nationally competitive grant schemes.
- The ability to develop and teach statistics, and/or data science subjects at the undergraduate and postgraduate level.
- Clear potential in graduate student supervision.
