Job Description
The Centre for Planetary Health and Food Security emphasises that food security and human well-being depend on the health of our ecosystems. Our researchers seek ways to improve the health of both natural and managed ecosystems with research that cuts across disciplines and creates an impact globally.
This Research Fellow will join the Professor of Plant Science’s research group on the Hort Innovation funded project titled ‘Supporting the Health and Expansion of the Australian Stingless Bee Industry’. Focus areas include bee nutrition, hive propagation, colony health, and pollination efficiency in crops like avocado, lychee, macadamia, and strawberry. Special emphasis on improving pollination efficiency. This Research Fellow position will be responsible for:
- Conducting fieldwork and laboratory research to support the Hort Innovation stingless-bee project.
- Preparing milestone reports, presentations, and publications for beekeepers and growers.
- Engaging with beekeepers, growers, researchers, and other stakeholders involved in the project.
- Maintaining a strong publication record and supervising research assistants, technical staff, and higher degree research candidates.
Salary Range
The full time equivalent base salary will be Academic Research Fellow Grade 2 range $110,464 - $131,180 per annum + 17% superannuation. The total FTE package will be in the range $129,243 - $153,481 per annum.
Qualifications
To be successful you will hold a PhD or equivalent qualifications/work experience in a relevant field such as horticultural science, pollination biology or bee biology.
You will also have research experience and skills in some or all of the following areas:
- Expertise in pollination biology, plant reproductive biology, and fruit or nut quality assessment.
- Knowledge of bee biology, particularly health and nutrition of social stingless bees.
- Proficiency in DNA metabarcoding, plant gene flow analysis, molecular biology, and statistical analysis.
- Experience in publishing research in peer-reviewed scientific journals and conducting farm-based research trials, with the ability to communicate findings to growers and beekeepers to enhance sustainability or profitability.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with experience in contributing to group research projects, mentoring, and supervising higher degree research students, while fostering a positive culture.
