About the opportunity
The University Librarian serves as the Library's chief officer with responsibility for delivering nationally visible leadership and acting as a strong advocate for the role of the University Library in the context of a research oriented public university.
Today, the Library spans 14 locations, including key sites such as Fisher Library, the SciTech Library, the Susan Wakil Health Building Library, the Herbert Smith Freehills Law Library, and the Conservatorium of Music Library. In addition to these libraries, the University offers dedicated learning hubs, technology spaces, and a robust digital presence to support students and researchers.
Your key responsibilities will be to:
- provide advice to the Vice-Provost and Provost on library-related operational issues, work closely with the Deputy Vice Chancellors to ensure strategic alignment
- lead and manage the University of Sydney Library System to deliver customer-focused services
- oversee the implementation of the Library’s change plan and 2023-2033 strategy
- lead and manage risk and safety, health and well-being for the University Libraries
About you (skills, capabilities and experience)
- tertiary qualifications in a relevant field
- a high level of business acumen and management experience
- demonstrated ability to provide creative and dynamic leadership in a time of change
- evidence of ability to work with donors and responsibly manage gifts to the library
- risk management expertise
- demonstrated ability to work in collaboration with First Nations communities to address matters around First Nations collections and scholarship.

Term and remuneration
The term of the appointment is fixed term for 5 years. The successful candidate will be offered a competitive remuneration package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and the candidate’s relevant experience and qualifications.
Pre-employment checks
Your employment is conditional upon the completion of all role required pre-employment or background checks in terms satisfactory to the University. Similarly, your ongoing employment is conditional upon the satisfactory maintenance of all relevant clearances and background check requirements. If you do not meet these conditions, the University may take any necessary step, including the termination of your employment.
