Job Description:
Geriatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship
This fellowship opportunity at the Royal Hobart Hospital provides Advanced Emergency Medicine Trainees the opportunity to subspecialise in Geriatric Emergency Medicine (GEM). The GEM Fellowship is a unique position which includes half time dedicated clinical support time to allow you to direct your own learning by being super-nummary at varied clinical learning sessions to support subspecialise in GEM while also working half time as a senior registrar in a tertiary mixed Emergency Department.
Location
Your leadership path could take you anywhere. What's different about Tasmania is our culture and lifestyle. Here, you will be encouraged to be your authentic self, to share your wisdom with our emerging generation of medical doctors, and in doing so, find your purpose.
Our remoteness helps drive a culture of invention and human connection, which feels both old-fashioned and… like the only future worth pursuing. Here in Tasmania, you'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to breathtaking coastlines, National Parks or award-winning restaurants or bars.
Some people surf in the early mornings and go fly fishing on weekends or take photography classes, write novels, sell preserves at the weekly farmers' markets, learn to mountain bike. They take part in the community, volunteering and serving on boards. And their spouses and children have similar opportunities to thrive in a quieter, safer, more adventurous place.
After a hard day at work, you can get on your bike or put on your boots and “tell it to the mountain” in minutes, not hours.
Something is happening here, and you're invited to be part of it.
It's not where you were born. It's who you are, and who you want to be. Be Tasmanian.
The Role of the Senior Registrar - Geriatric Emergency Medicine (GEM) Fellowship
Based in the scenic waterfront area of Hobart, Tasmania, this unique and fantastic opportunity provides you a supportive learning environment where you can create your own learning journey.
GEM learning placements can be arranged, with the support of your FACEM and Geriatrician supervisors, in multiple specialities that manage older patients. You can sit in on clinics and ward rounds, join home visits and learn from hospital, community and allied health providers, including Geriatrics, Palliative care, Hospital in the Home (HiTH), Geriatric Evaluation and Management at Home, Trauma, Older Persons Mental Health, Pharmacy, Emergency Medicine Assessment and Management Team, General Practice (specifically working in Residential Aged Care settings) and the Community Rapid Response Allied Health Team.
You will also have time to undertake a quality improvement or research project of interest to you with mentorship and support from the Tasmanian Emergency Research (TASER) group.
You will be encouraged to be yourself, to learn, to grow and to develop meaning in your work. The on-the-ground experience you'll gain in your Fellowship with us will set in motion a career pathway to choose your own adventure! Your practical and academic experiences at the Royal Hobart Hospital will empower your future, whatever career path you choose.
Tasmania has the oldest and fastest-aging population in Australia with 22% of ED presentations comprised of patients over the age of 65. Tasmania is the perfect site to specialise in GEM. At the RHH, you'll attend our annual GEMTAS and Trauma in the Older Person Education Days covering the core GEM curriculum and we will support you to be involved in this and other education events.
The Royal Hobart Hospital has a friendly and supportive team of staff who foster growth and development. You will be joining a department dedicated to the wellbeing of its staff, exemplified by winning the ACEM Wellbeing Award in 2022 for our numerous wellbeing strategies embedded in our daily work practices.
In a world with an ageing population, a subspecialisation in GEM provides you the opportunity to truly provide excellent emergency care to older people.
