The Royal Hobart Hospital and Department of Health is seeking interest from suitably qualified applicants for a Staff Specialist - Rehabilitation vacancy (to cover an extended leave) commencing as soon as possible until 26 June 2026.

As a Rehabilitation Specialist Consultant, participate in all aspects of the medical care of rehabilitation patients/clients across a range of settings, including acute inpatient, in-reach, ambulatory and community rehabilitation services. The occupant will also be involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, be actively involved in research and undertake quality improvement activities.

Royal Hobart Hospital is Tasmania's largest hospital and major referral centre. As the major clinical teaching and research centre, RHH collaborates with the University of Tasmania and other institutions. All our services work closely together to focus on delivering excellence in healthcare to achieve improved outcomes for our consumers, our workforce, and the Tasmanian community.

The Rehabilitation department provides consulting, In-reach rehabilitation, inpatient rehabilitation, and outpatient clinic service to southern Tasmania. Consulting and In-Reach rehabilitation is at RHH. Inpatient sub acute care with 18 beds ward is at the Repatriation Centre. There is also contracted Rehabilitation beds of up to 12 beds at the St Johns, Calvary hospital in South Hobart. Case mix include patients with stroke, neurological conditions, post orthopaedics surgeries, brain injuries, spinal injuries, limb amputations and medical conditions. The outpatient clinics at Statton Clinic, Repatriation site run twice a week. These are general rehabilitation, brain injury, amputee, spasticity, spinal and transition clinics. Botulinum toxin injections are done thrice a week at the Ambulatory Care Clinic, RHH. Currently there are 7 part time Rehabilitation Physicians and 4 Registrars in accredited Rehabilitation training positions.

The Role

1. Patient Care:

• Provide a consultant service to inpatients, admitting and managing patients under their care.
• Accept referrals and undertake consultation and patient review.
• Participate in outpatient clinics in all aspects of rehabilitation medicine.
• Regular attendance at multidisciplinary clinic and meetings.
• Participate in quality activity programs.

2. Teaching:

• Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate specialist trainee teaching.
• Liaise with the University of Tasmania (UTAS) Department of Medicine in respect to the teaching of undergraduates and Registrars.

3. Education and Research:

• Maintain an active interest in research.
• Active participation in ongoing education meetings and activities.

4. Management:

• Responsible to the Head of Department (Rehabilitation).
• Liaison with the UTAS' Department of Medicine on issues relating to undergraduate teaching and research.

5. Performance and Development Review:

• To be conducted with the Head of Department on an annual basis.

6. Actively participate in and contribute to the organisation's Quality & Safety and Work Health & Safety processes, including in the development and implementation of safety systems, improvement initiatives, safeguarding practices for vulnerable people, and related training.

Essential Requirements

• Holds specialist registration; or
• Is a registered Medical Practitioner who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) who is on the specialist pathway; or
• Is a registered Medical Practitioner who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) who has a recognised overseas specialist qualification and is assessed as having sufficient experience in the speciality.
