The Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) and the Neonatal and Paediatric ICU (NPICU) are seeking interest from suitably qualified clinicians for a permanent full-time or part-time Staff Specialist – Intensivist position, to provide for the critical care needs of paediatric patients. The RHH is Tasmania’s tertiary referral centre and is also the primary teaching hospital for the University of Tasmania, School of Medicine.
The successful applicant will lead the clinical care of critically ill infants and children cared for by our NPICU. The NPICU provides a state-wide tertiary service with a combined model of care (neonatology and paediatric critical care) but with a split consultant roster for NICU and PICU patients. Our Paediatric Intensivists collaborate closely with neonatologists in the NPICU, support the Tasmanian Critical Care Retrieval Service in providing a Paediatric Emergency Transport Service, and work with our adult ICU colleagues at the RHH in the care of older paediatric critical care patients.

The NPICU at the RHH is a 28-bed unit within the Department of Newborn Services and Children’s Critical Care (NSCCC), comprised of 4 PICU, 8 NICU and 16 Special Care Nursery beds. NSCCC includes the provision of statewide consultation and retrieval services for unwell neonates, infants and children (NETS and PETS).
The Role
This is an opportunity for a Staff Specialist - Intensivist, full-time or part-time, based at the RHH and able to care for critically ill infants and children. The role requires candidates to provide clinical services of the highest possible standard for sick term neonates, infants, children, and the Paediatric Emergency Transport Service (PETS).
The role includes:
Provision of on-call services for Paediatric Intensive Care and PETS, including diagnosis, treatment, and care for paediatric patients in the RHH NPICU, and supervision and/or conduct of paediatric emergency retrievals.
Pursuit of improved outcomes for critically ill children in Tasmania by participating in teaching, research and clinical practice improvement initiatives relevant to paediatric intensive care.
Provide supervision and advice in matters relating to paediatric intensive care throughout Tasmania.
Commit to skills maintenance in the Paediatric Intensive Care discipline.
