The School of Psychology at UNSW is the leading Psychology school in Australia. It is located in the Faculty of Science and is recognised nationally and internationally for its excellence in research and teaching. It offers world class undergraduate psychology degrees, as well as postgraduate professional Masters training in Clinical and Forensic Psychology, an online Graduate Diploma program, and a PhD research program with over 120 students. 40 academic staff conduct experimental research in many areas of Psychology, including behavioural and cognitive neuroscience, perception, learning, memory and cognition, as well as health, social, developmental, clinical and forensic psychology. UNSW Psychology is the only School in the southern hemisphere ranked in the top 30 by discipline in the THES, QS and ARWU rankings. The School has well equipped research and teaching facilities and attracts outstanding staff and students from Australia and overseas. UNSW is located 5 km from the centre of Sydney and is close to other research centres, teaching hospitals, transport, shopping, and beaches.

A Lecturer (Level B) / Senior Lecturer (Level C) is expected to carry out activities to develop their scholarly research and professional activities both nationally and internationally and to contribute significantly to achieving the teaching and service missions of the School. This role particularly requires a track record of conducting research in the area of perception.

In addition to the above, at the Associate Professor (Level D) level, this role plays a key role in leading and advancing outstanding research and professional activities.

About the role

• LEVEL B - $127k - $150k / LEVEL C - $155k - 178k / LEVEL D - $185k - $204k plus 17% Superannuation and annual leave loading
• Fixed Term - 2 years Convertible Tenure Track (CTT)
• Full time (35 hours)

Specific responsibilities for this role include:

LEVEL B:

• Demonstrate and continuously develop a well-defined teaching philosophy that inspires student learning.
• Conduct classes, assess student learning achievements and support students in postgraduate and undergraduate courses in statistics and research methods in line with UNSW policy.
• Design and develop learning activities and resources, and provide assessment and feedback using a range of suitable approaches and learning environments.
• Initiate the development of experimental approaches to teaching and learning statistics and research methods with the support of more senior academics.
• Support learning progression with students as individuals (through such activities as one-to-one consultation) and as a cohort (through general course related advice) to achieve positive learning and employability outcomes for students.
• Manage course administration as Course Authority, including academic quality assurance.
• Maintain professional development in pedagogy, disciplinary knowledge and minimum professional accreditation requirements (where relevant).
• Make a positive contribution to School meetings and seminars and be a member of School/Faculty committees as required.
• Engage in individual and/or collaborative research in psychology in a manner consistent with disciplinary practice.
• Create scholarly impact which is recognised by peers in the advancement of disciplinary knowledge in psychology.
• Conduct research/scholarly activities under limited supervision, either independently or as a member of a team (as per the norms of the discipline) and design research projects in psychology.
• Contribute to the development of applications for competitive funding under the guidance of senior colleagues, including participating as co-investigator or chief investigator in competitive grant applications.
• Mentor and guide students and colleagues and develop the next generation of academics through involvement in supervision of HDRs (as per the norms of the discipline).
• Align with and actively demonstrate the Code of Conduct and Values.
• Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.

LEVEL C:
(in addition to the above)

• Apply a well-defined teaching philosophy and a critically reflective teaching practice that inspires student learning.
• Maintain and develop links within the discipline industry and profession (e.g. contribute to professional development activities).
• Work collaboratively to identify and apply for internal education funding opportunities.
• Undertake independent research and make independent contributions to research that have a significant impact in the field of perception and create a nationally recognised research track record.
• Develop research groups in area of specialist expertise and research methods that are appropriate to the discipline.
• Attract peer recognition and establish research network/s (based on the norms of the discipline) at national level.
• Obtain research income from nationally competitive research grants (and/or research fellowships) and research end-users as a member or leader, at or above the level that is relevant to the discipline in leading universities.

LEVEL D:
(in addition to the above)

• Engage in peer review and disseminate best-practice in education.
• Contribute to support strategies for learning progression and to the review, development and/or design of curriculum.
• Provide administrative and academic leadership at School, Faculty, and University levels, working collaboratively with peers and contributing to broader institutional and national teaching and learning initiatives.
• Engage with academic, professional, and international organisations relevant to the objectives of the School and Faculty, undertaking knowledge exchange activities and contributing to commercialisation of research outcomes.
• Carry out original/innovative research, actively contributing to the advancement of knowledge in perception, including making contributions to the discipline which are recognised at a national level with emerging international impact.
• Establish a distinguished program of research at UNSW and build a research group in the area of perception, establishing research network/s at an international level and participating in major research collaborations.
• Demonstrate an established record of substantial research income, primarily as a grant application leader, consistent with that of a national leader in their field of research in leading universities.
• Lead significant research proposals submitted to competitive funding bodies and in terms of impact on the end users of research.
• Recruit HDRs based on research reputation and supervise HDRs to timely completion as primary supervisor.

About the successful applicant

LEVEL B:

• A PhD in Psychology or a related discipline.
• Proven commitment to proactively keeping up to date with discipline knowledge and developments.
• Demonstrated experience in teaching and learning design, development and delivery in statistics and research methods at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level.
• Experience using and/or designing with educational technologies and online delivery methods.
• Evidence of teaching effectiveness and passion for educational excellence (e.g. relevant discipline-based curriculum design and development at a variety of levels and scales).
• Demonstrated knowledge of industry or experience of work-integrated learning (desirable).
• Evidence of ability to support and inspire students from diverse backgrounds and support student equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives.
• Demonstrated track record in research with outcomes of high quality and high impact with clear evidence of the desire and ability to continually achieve research excellence as well as the capacity for research leadership.
• A track record of significant involvement with the profession and/or industry.
• High level communication skills and ability to network effectively and interact with a diverse range of students and staff.
• Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships.
• Evidence of highly developed interpersonal and organisational skills.
• An understanding of and commitment to UNSW's aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
• Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.

LEVEL C:

• Demonstrated success in initiating curriculum development and improvement.
