Your next career opportunity
You will join Prof Day’s laboratory at the Bio21 Institute to apply genomic surveillance and population genetics to pressing questions in malaria epidemiology and parasite ecology. You will work within an international multidisciplinary team (including NYU and Institutes in Ghana), independently lead research projects, mentor junior researchers and have strong opportunities to publish, present and contribute to grant applications.
What you will deliver:
Lead and Deliver Research: Independently design, plan and execute genomic epidemiology experiments and analyses to meet project timelines and milestones.
Analyse, Record and Communicate Findings: Perform qualitative and statistical analysis of sequencing and epidemiological data, maintain detailed records and report results to collaborators.
Project Development and Funding Contribution: Contribute to manuscript preparation and assist in drafting competitive grant applications related to your research.
Supervision, Engagement and Compliance: Mentor students and junior staff, present at meetings and conferences, and support laboratory documentation, ethics/OGTR compliance and OH&S responsibilities.
You may be a great fit if:
You have a PhD in genomics, bioinformatics, genomic epidemiology, molecular ecology or a closely related discipline.
You are an experienced genomic epidemiologist, molecular ecologist or bioinformatician with hands on sequencing analysis skills.
You possess strong population genetics and statistical analysis experience applied to pathogen genomic data, especially Plasmodium spp.
You are collaborative, self-driven and able to lead projects with minimal supervision while supporting team objectives.
You have a proven track record in preparing manuscripts, presenting at conferences and contributing to grant applications.

The Department prides itself on offering world-class training in microbiology and immunology led by teaching specialists and teaching-research academics. This research-led teaching in infection and immunity provides superb training for undergraduate and graduate students alike. The Department is also home to the Victorian Public Health Laboratory for Microbiology, known as the Microbiological Diagnostic Unit (MDU), which provides advice and services in public health microbiology. Our research focuses largely on understanding the immune system and on pathogens and infectious agents aiming to develop new ways to detect, control and treat infectious diseases or alternatively to manipulate the immune system to improve responses to organisms that cause infectious diseases or cancer.
